Mexico & Letting Go Of Being Right

I don't know how I ended up in Mexico for New Year's Eve. Not that I didn't plan it. I made the airline reservations, booked the meditation retreat and purchased some cute yoga outfits.  So here I am in a small fishing village, by the ocean in Mexico. It is funny how I do that. Just fly by the seat of my pants and hope for a great outcome. Fortunately I have complete faith in my serendipity, and things usually work out. With that said, all this soul searching meditation got me thinking about what I want to change in 2014. I decided what I really want is to let go of is the need to be right.

It is not that I think I am right all the time, but sometimes my self-esteem is fragile. When it is,  I just don't want to take any shit from anybody.  So how can I let go of this attachment to being right? According to motivational speaker and author, Wayne Dyer, letting go of an attachment to being right can be a fairly simple process. Anytime you feel the need to be right, you make the decision to be right or to be kind. He says that most stress in our lives results from holding on to being right because our ego stubbornly believes we need it. As we all know, ego can be our greatest enemy. So tonight I am saying goodbye and good riddance to being right. When I feel the need to be right, I will replace it with kindness in 2014.

Happy New Year everyone! Thanks for being part of this compassionate movement. We can change our lives and the world, one vegan at a time.

Ps Had a delicious vegan breakfast of avocado and steamed cactus on tortillas topped with salsa. Keeping it simple in 2014.

  1. Happy New Year! I just wanted to let you know how much reading this post has meant to me. I have been struggling with wanting to be right in a situation I am dealing with right now. It’s so hard. I am right, I want to prove I am right, but to what outcome? I will be right, and everyone will still be sad. It sounds very difficult, but I am going to try my best this year to be kind instead of right. Thank you so much, reading this has made a huge difference in my attitude towards this new year.

    1. You are doing the right thing Dee! So happy this post helped. Happy New Year and thanks for being part of our compassionate community!

  2. I realized this year that I do the same thing – and often, I act like a know-it-all in a related but more obnoxious way. It’s definitely something I’m working on – I don’t ever want to alienate others because I feel the need to be right (both when I actually am right, but especially when I’m wrong)!

Sounds like a wonderful way to spend the new year! Happy 2014!

  3. What if sometimes being stubborn about being right IS the same as being kind? Like with veganism. If we give in and say, “Who knows, maybe I’m wrong” when debating whether it’s justifiable to kill/abuse/imprison animals just for taste and convenience, this is unkind to the animals. We have to stand firm by certain truths, because if we waiver, others will suffer.
